Facebook is the placed in the second position, after Google, in the Top Sites on the internet, with 800+ million users and has hit a trillion views recently. Why would a website like that need any advertising?
If you were to believe your eyes, Facebook has started a campaign on Google Adwords, with visual as well as text-based ads, asking people to join Facebook. Unmistakably, if you click on any one of these ads, they are redirected straight to Facebook.com, thus eliminating the fear that a third party may be using these ads to gain attention.
The irony is that some of these ads sport a +1 button, from Google+, one of its competitor. Perhaps Facebook is afraid of Google+ in the market, maybe?
